PATAGONIA {W TREK DAY III}

day III of our trek was the craziest weather we experienced – rainstorms + WIND! – luckily we came prepared with pack covers and rain gear. campo italiano {a small free campsite} was at the base of this trail where we were able to drop our packs for a bit. we saw glaciers and even a mini avalanche. later we walked along a crystal blue lake to arrive at our final refugio – vertice paine grande. this was the biggest of all the refugios; we even had our own little teeny tiny room. there was a bar and a mini-grocery where we were able to pick up some treats. it made for a fun last night on the trail.

PATAGONIA {W TREK DAY II}

by day two we were starting to feel comfortable with the fact that our entire day would be spent hiking – because the sun doesn't go down until 10pm, we also felt free to take as many photo stops / breaks / long lunches as we wanted. the scenery changed drastically throughout the day as you'll see in these photos – by the time we arrived to our next stop – refugio cuernos and dome frances – we were ready for the new nightly routine: showers, cards, and drinks. 
i think this was my favorite day.

PATAGONIA {W TREK DAY 1}

on the day after christmas we caught our final bus into the national park where we were dropped at the beginning of the w trek. this trek got its name from the w-ish shape it makes as you hike yourself from campground to campground over 4 days. we knew this journey would be tough, but it wasn't until i walked directly up hill for hours that i really knew what tough meant. 

our first night was spent at refugio el chileno which was one of the coziest places i've ever seen. tucked next to a beautiful river with clean bunks for us to sleep in and a warm meal. after hiking all-frickin-day it was so nice to come back here, share a bottle of wine, play cards, and go to bed early before our next day of hiking.

PATAGONIA {EL CALAFATE}

our trip was split in two– city exploring {buenos aires}, and wilderness exploring {patagonia}. it wasn't until we started planning that we realized how hard it was to actually get there. first we flew south into a town called el calafate. we then caught a bus 5+ hours to a smaller town, puerto natales where we had one final 2+ hour bus into torres del paine national park. when we saw a "you are here" map i realized we were as far south as you can get before hitting antartica! 

we decided to stop in el calafate for a day to explore the perito moreno glacier and go horseback riding. it was a perfect segway into our hiking trip. while these towns feel like they're in the middle of absolute no where, they still manage to serve you delicious food and endless bottles of wine to make every adventure fancy.
